Combined spinal and vascular reconstructive surgery
Associate Professor Matthew Scott-Young, Assistant Professor Laurence McEntee and our partners at Bond University have had their most recent paper published in International Journal of Spine Surgery.
The paper, Combined Aorto-Iliac and Anterior Lumbar Spine Reconstruction: A Case Series, can be accessed here.
This paper presents the case histories of 5 patients who had both arterial disease and degenerative disc disease of the lumbar spine. These diseases are often treated in isolation, resulting in two hospital stays and operations.
This case series showed that, despite the complexity of the combined surgery, it can be performed safely in a specialised setting.
There were no in-hospital complications, and all patients experienced significant improvement in both back and leg pain.
