Matthew Scott-Young

Orthopaedic Surgeon (Spine)

MBBS | FRACS | FAOrthA

I only ever wanted to be a doctor. My Dad was a general surgeon in Northern Queensland and my Mum was a registered nurse, so medicine was part of the fabric of our family. I was taught that looking after people was a privilege.

After finishing my medical degree at the University of Queensland, I studied to be an orthopaedic surgeon, finishing my training in 1995. From there I completed a postgraduate fellowship in spine surgery at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, which put me alongside some of the world’s leading surgeons who introduced me to evidence based medicine. Evidence based medicine combines the individual clinical experience of the surgeon with the best external clinical evidence available to produce the optimal outcome for an individual patient.

Prior to entering private practice, I worked in the public system as the Director of Orthopaedics at what was the Gold Coast Hospital. In 1998, I founded Gold Coast Spine, a private practice in Southport. As well as working as a consultant at Gold Coast Spine, I perform surgery at Pindara Private Hospital and am the President of the Spine Society of Australia. This post allows me to continue striving to raise the standard of care in the treatment of spinal conditions.

At Gold Coast Spine, we demonstrate our commitment to the best outcomes for our patients through the collection of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and have been doing this for the past 20 years. We have also forged a partnership with Bond University to ensure that our research into conditions of the spine continues and is published. Following patients post-operatively is part of our commitment to our mission: changing lives through excellence in spine care.

I consider that I have a responsibility to the future of spine care in Australia and, as part of that responsibility, I participate in the training of our next generation of spine surgeons through a Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) accredited Post Fellowship Education and Training (PFET) program.

Consulting a spine surgeon can be an anxious time for patients but at Gold Coast Spine we have the experience and expertise to put you at ease. We welcome your questions and look forward to providing you with world class care.
